Gavin Michael Peter
Director of Student Life
Gavin Michael Peter is the Director of Student Life, which also embodies the role of Director of Residential Life. This is a role he established to develop and monitor the systems for the students outside of the academic classroom and to be a liaison between the students and the administrative body. He has been a teacher since he was 16 years old and joined the team at ALA in July 2008 as one of the Inaugural Faculty.
He was originally brought in to set up and develop the Arts programme, but this role expanded to Residential Life and then Student Life as the need for these was greater at the time. Gavin is Zimbabwean and taught there at several schools for 15 years in English, Mathematics, Latin, Drama, French, Theatre Arts and Public Speaking. He also worked as a professional performer around the world on stage and on film.
Gavin studied at the University of Zimbabwe and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. In Zimbabwe, he has helped set up and run the Harare International Festival of the Arts, beginning in 2000; a post graduate school for media training, called Theory X, beginning in 2007, and organised and has run a National Festival of Speech and Drama for over 10,000 children since 2007.
Gavin is a descendant of generations of educators, some who have built schools and libraries. He believes that knowledge is the key to everything, and he likes to teach by the philosophy that confidence comes from success. With confidence and knowledge - all is possible.
